REVIEW: Silent Sky teaches love is space and time measured by our hearts

Image
by Gerone Baladhay Science, astrophysics, nebulae, cepheids or comparative-analysis may not be the words you woul d expect as ingredients on the recipe of love nor would it spell appealing for a play. However, it takes one Henrietta Leavi tt and her Harvard peers, to smash first impressions as exhilaratingly portrayed in a story of breaking women stereotypes, pursuing dreams, and learning that love can shine as bright as a star even if you’re not looking through a telescope. Repertory Philippines’s restaging of Lauren Guenderson’s Silent Sky at the Carlos Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati is not just about the science of space, but the science of human emotions that is of earthly experiences which can be easily felt through the word play of a wonderfully written script. No sweat since Director Joy Virata has an adept and accomplished cast to bring the story to life in a humorous, but above all- triumphant way. Silent Sky put to light, Leavitt (played by Cathy ...

Benilde whose colorful youth is tinted gray with the conflicts of following one’s calling in a society plagued by war, poverty and lack of education. Torn between sacrificing his family and following his vocation, along with impediments about his stature, Benilde was able to overcome them all with his passion of prayer that jumpstarted his journey of defeating the big evils of the world such as indifference and ignorance with small acts of compassion and diligence. The musical...

NCCA Gallery banners “Sisidlan ng Kabanalan” this January

Image
Administration (IA) launched an exhibit which expresses religious symbols and personas of Christian in art at the NCCA Gallery this January. “Sisidlan ng Kabanalan” is a contemplation on the concept of vessels. A sisidlan or vessel and the holiness or values it contains can take many forms and be interpreted on various levels: an urna as an artistic and devotional reliquary; the image of Mary as a signifier of the persona venerated in the Litany of Loreto as the Spiritual Vessel, the Vessel of Honor and the Singular Vessel of Devotion; and the museum an entity, both abstract and concrete, dedicated to the conservation, research and exhibition of cultural heritage. The expressions of religious symbols and personas of Christian faith in art emanates the values that they represent, and these values were, and still are instrumental in shaping Filipino Culture. IA was established in 1979 for the orderly restoration and development of Intramuros as a monument to the Hispanic period of...

Bibeth Orteza Joins the Cast of “Silent Sky” #SilentSkyMNL

Reine Productions, in cooperation with Repertory Philippines, brings the critically-acclaimed play “Silent Sky” back to the stage for limited encore performances this February 2019. “I fell in love with the show the first time I saw it,” says executive producer Ria Pangilinan, “I was invited to catch a rehearsal, and I immediately knew it was a story that every woman— well, everyone — needs to hear.” Written by America's most produced playwright, Lauren Gunderson, “Silent Sky”, is a poetic and poignant retelling of the life of Henrietta Leavitt, one of the greatest unsung heroes in the history of science. Leavitt was among the Harvard Computers: women hired by the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900’s to painstakingly analyze and catalogue every observable star in the heavens. She, along with Annie Cannon and Williamina Fleming, were among the first women to blaze a trail for themselves in the heavily male-dominated science of astronomy. Leavitt battled with disability,...
