OPM is love. To argue that too much Western and Asian influence has infiltrated our local music is valid, but we must never discount the beauty of OPM love songs and its power to easily explain our complicated millennial emotions into lyrics.
Curiously, this writer immediately binge-watched all the music video entries of this year’s Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs—an ongoing local songwriting and music video competition from ABS-CBN’s Star Music—and one entry that ambitiously interpreted the song gave this writer the feels. Unlike most of the music videos which only showcased glossy shots, popular love team interpreters or breathtaking sceneries, this is perhaps the only entry with a clear and compelling narrative that uniquely reflects the message of its song.
“Patay na si Uto,” written by Oliver Narag and interpreted by Nyoy Volante, was brought to life by an action-filled and equally heart wrenching music video by iAcademy.
For starters, Uto is short for “uto-uto,” a Tagalog term for being gullible. Narag wrote the song to symbolically embody “gullible” into a person.
The premise of the music video’s story is simple. It’s about a wrestler, his abusive girlfriend and his journey of choosing himself, metaphorically shown through the series of fights he had to face.
MAJOR OUCH!
The narrative was written so that anyone who has been taken for granted can empathize with Uto, and wish they had the same chance he got at the end of the video.
The whiz idea of using pro-wrestlers as actors made the stunts realistic and honestly quite painful to watch. Wrestling fans would love the Top Rope Splash when Uto eventually won over himself and gain his freedom. The gritty and dark take on the cinematography complimented the overall theme, while Nyoy’s performance, both as the singer and silent actor was superbly done. I am no expert but that audience shot where everyone was in slow-motion but Nyoy was not was technically challenging to pull off, but they succeeded.
And just like what I wrote, it is all about the SONG. “Patay na si Uto” is an ANTHEM for everyone who went through the painful path of destroying chunks of their heart in order to let go and love themselves once and for all... Even if it hurts, even if it hurts so damn bad.
Link is below, watch it to cry and rejoice with me.
This song is going straight to my playlist.
