QUICK REVIEW: Angry Christ Is The One Play You Shouldn't Miss This May!
![]() |
| With Banaue Miclat-Janssen after the show. |
The first time I came across Angry Christ, I was intrigued on how a play may be made about a chapel's mural. Honestly, I didn't know much about Alfonso Ossorio. The synopsis promised a good story and seeing that Floy Quintos is the playwright made me confident in it. Upon further reading, I saw the names of great actors such as Nel Gomez, Kalil Almonte, Banaue Miclat-Janssen, a dear friend. Expectations became high.
I did go to the theater with much anticipation and those high expectations were surely met! When you enter, you see a stage that has been transformed into the interior of the chapel where most of the story took place. A lecturer breaks your wait as she enters the stage giving you sufficient background on the play. Even if you do not know anything about the story of Ossorio, you get to know him intimately. A wonderful testament on how effective Floy Quintos writes. Other than greatness in the production, script, and acting, Monino Duque's lighting direction proves that is a class of its own. In the few hours that you watch the play, you are transported into different times of the day so effectively that you almost feel the rising and the setting of the sun.
It is a long play when compared to others but it is one play that you may want to watch more than once! Some of the themes include homosexualty and bisexuality, the divide between social classes, love, and how the church affects communities. If you can only afford to find time for one play, Angry Christ should be your choice. Right after I saw it, I joked to Banaue that if I should be quoted about the play I want my words to be "Punyeta! Ang ganda!" Because it really, really is!
