Iwi and Nicole Laurel set to launch duet of 80s hit song Special Memory on May 9
In 1983, a 19 year old Iwi Laurel was juggling theater rehearsals, a pre-law course, a restaurant job, multiple singing stints, when a golden opportunity came to her in the form of a song that would change the direction of her life. Raymond Lauchengco approached Iwi to ask her to sing “Special Memory” which became part of a movie that he was working on with Gary Valenciano. The demo tape was sent at 11AM and at 1PM of the same day, Iwi was already in the studio. The film became a hit and instead of being a lawyer, she became a singer.
Three years after Iwi Laurel’s encounter with Cecile Azarcon’s creation, she became a mother to Nicole. Being a single mother was full of challenges but their bonding through unconditional love and music created their unbreakable relationship. Time and time again, the relationship may be tested but they could only come out stronger after every challenge.
Now in the year 2021, Nicole looks back to how her life has been so far. Nicole today is a woman of strength who has found parallels in how her mom lived her life. Iwi’s upbringing has definitely helped Nicole to endure all the challenges life has allowed her to go through. Gratefulness led Nicole to reach out to the composer and she was given the blessing to remake it into a duet. Nicole also met up with Homer Flores, the one who made the original arrangement and requested him to do the new arrangement.
“Special Memory,” it’s 2021 rendition profoundly reflects how passionate a mother’s love truly is. The classic has stood the test of time and it’s fresh sound will surely be pleasing to the ears of younger listeners. We may start listening to Iwi and Nicole Laruel’s “Special Memory” on May 9, 2021 on Spotify. The music video will also be launched on May 14 via Facebook Live.
