REP's Continuing Theatrical Resurgence: A Journey Through the 87th Season of Love, Laughter, and Legacy

Repertory Philippines (REP) is set to captivate audiences with its 87th season, showcasing a diverse range of dynamic productions that explore the intricate tapestry of love and yearning. After a hiatus from having a full season since 2019, the renowned theater company is back with a bang, celebrating its enduring legacy and contributing to the global resurgence of live stage performances.
Written by Nobel Prize winner in Literature Harold Pinter, Betrayal makes its Manila debut through Repertory Philippines, featuring London-based Filipino actors James Bradwell, James Cooney, and Vanessa White.

Betrayal: A Fusion of the Classic and Innovation
One highlight that immediately caught my attention is the Manila premiere of "Betrayal." Having heard of the Broadway production featuring Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, and Charlie Cox, I am thrilled to witness the Repertory Philippines' take on this iconic play next year. What adds an intriguing twist is the decision to modify the characters to be Filipino-British, adding a layer of nuance and cultural resonance to the narrative. It's a bold move that reflects the adaptability and creativity of REP.

Directed by Victor Lirio, this production employs a reverse-chronological structure, exploring the consequences of an extramarital affair on three complex individuals. The inclusion of London-based Filipino actors James Bradwell, James Cooney, and Vanessa White, along with local talents Jef Flores and Regina De Vera, promises a gripping exploration of complex relationships. Moreover, the Manila staging of "Betrayal" marks REP's first venture into Harold Pinter's works, adding another layer of excitement to the mix.

What makes this staging of "Betrayal" even more special is its role in launching The Bridge Project, a groundbreaking skills exchange program. Filipino-British actors, New York-based Filipino-American designers, and director Victor Lirio will not only perform in the play but also conduct free masterclasses, lectures, and readings for Filipino theater practitioners and audiences, enriching the local theater scene.
I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change takes audiences through a whirlwind series of vignettes on love and relationships.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change: A Rollercoaster of Emotions
The inclusion of the off-Broadway musical "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" promises a rollercoaster of emotions. As someone who appreciates relatable stories, I can already sense that this musical will take the audience on a journey through the highs and lows of love and relationships. The blend of humor and music, under the direction of Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, guarantees an entertaining and emotionally resonant experience.

From June 7 to 30, REP goes off-Broadway with this lighthearted musical crafted by Joe Di Pietro and Jimmy Roberts. Perfect for fans of modern musicals and sitcoms, the revue is rife with a whirlwind cast of characters ranging from big-city singles and awkward wallflowers to suburban settlers and sassy seniors - all played by a cast of four! The longest-running off-Broadway musical revue with tours to 250 cities worldwide, this musical also tackles everything people thought about dating and marriage, lovers, and in-laws—but were just too afraid to confront and admit.
Based on Gilda Cordero Fernando’s children’s story, Jepoy and the Magic Circle is a light- hearted musical that follows the magical journey of Jepoy and his dog Galis. The two encounter kapres, aswangs and tiyanaks and everything in between, to attend a tikbalang wedding.

Jepoy and the Magic Circle: Rediscovering Philippine Mythology
"Jepoy and the Magic Circle" holds a special place in my anticipation, as it aims to reintroduce Philippine Mythology to a new generation. The prospect of experiencing a musical that brings our folklore to life, with the creative expertise of Joy Virata, Rody Vera, and Ejay Yatco, is genuinely exciting. It's an artistic endeavor that not only entertains but also educates, preserving our cultural heritage in a captivating manner.

Premiering in the last quarter of the year, Jepoy and the Magic Circle is bound to resonate with young audiences, leaving them with a meaningful and enduring message about the power of empathy and caring for the planet. This musical adventure is brought to life by RTYA Creative Director Joy Virata as its director, award-winning playwright Rody Vera, and Ejay Yatco as its musical director.
Repertory Philippines’ season ender is Going Home to Christmas which features the music of Mr. Christmas himself, Jose Mari Chan.

Going Home to Christmas: A Festive Musical Extravaganza
Finally, the announcement of the first-ever original jukebox musical, "Going Home to Christmas," featuring the music of Jose Mari Chan, is a delightful surprise. Chan's iconic songs setting the backdrop for a festive theater experience is something I never knew I needed. With the creative talents of Leo Rialp, Jeremy Domingo, Robbie Guevara, Luna GriƱo-Inocian, and Joel Trinidad coming together, this promises to be a heartwarming treat for the entire family.

For the season’s closing show, REP taps distinguished director, actor, and set designer Leo Rialp as director and esteemed theater actor Jeremy Domingo as assistant director. The musical is written by REP stalwarts Robbie Guevara, Luna GriƱo-Inocian, and Joel Trinidad, with additional scenes by Cathy Azanza-Dy. Chan’s music and lyrics lend themselves to the charming and heartwarming stories; provide the perfect soundtrack for this seasonal offering; and, make Going Home to Christmas a theater experience the whole family will surely enjoy.

REP's Future: Balancing Tradition and Modernity
What strikes me about REP's 2024 season is its commitment to evolving while preserving tradition. The incorporation of modern elements into their productions demonstrates a forward-thinking approach without entirely abandoning the rich heritage they are known for. It's a delicate balance that showcases REP's dedication to staying relevant and resonating with contemporary audiences.

As REP President and CEO Mindy Perez-Rubio rightly said, "Despite dealing with close to four years of darkness, the show must go on." REP is not just going on; it's stepping up and adapting, ensuring that the magic of live theater continues to enchant audiences in the years to come.
