NIYEBE: Isang Musikal – A Story of Love, Loss, and Identity Opens February 12

The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) launches its 91st season with the experimental play “Niyebe: Isang Musikal”, an adaptation of a Gabriel Garcia Márquez short story. This groundbreaking musical will run from February 12 to March 27, 2025, at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio.

Blending music, choreography, and a unique narrative style, this production is led by Dudz Teraña, who serves as director, writer, lyricist, and choreographer. The story is brought to life with music by Vince Lim, complemented by choreography from Carlon Matobato, and supported by a cast of talented FEU students and alumni.

A Love Story with a Tragic Turn

Set in the unforgiving winter of Europe, Niyebe: Isang Musikal tells the story of newlyweds Billy Sanchez and Nena Deconte. What begins as a honeymoon ends in despair when a minor injury leads to Nena’s untimely death. Stranded in a foreign land, Billy is left to grapple with solitude, grief, and the bureaucracy that denies him a final farewell to his wife.

Alternating performers portray Billy and Nena, with RB Pascua (IAS ‘25) and Dave Bambang (IARFA ‘29) playing Billy, and Kesiah Eunice Aritao (IAS ‘25) and Brigitta Claire Marilla (IAS ‘25) as Nena. The Narrator is performed by Aaron Bayani (FIT ‘25), while an ensemble cast adds depth and vibrancy to the production.

Beyond the Romance

“Niyebe isn’t just a love story,” explains director Dudz Teraña. “It’s an exploration of existential despair, class disparity, and the fragility of happiness. The narrative dives into questions of identity and purpose, inspired by the timeless themes of Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s work.”

By reimagining the story as a musical, the production introduces an innovative approach to García Márquez’s narrative, combining poignant lyrics, evocative music, and impactful choreography.
