A Celebration of Cultural Identity: “ADHIKA” Dance Performance Set for May 11 at Rizal Park

Mark your calendars for a powerful and soul-stirring showcase of Philippine culture. On May 11, 2025 (Sunday) at 5:30 PM, the National Parks Development Committee presents ADHIKA, a free and open-air dance performance at the Open Air Auditorium in Rizal Park, Luneta, Manila, as part of its Concert at the Park series in celebration of the Department of Tourism’s founding anniversary.

ADHIKA brings together two renowned cultural institutions: the Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe (PB) from Manila and the Parangal Dance Company from California, USA. Co-directed by Ronnie del Barrio and Eric Solano, the performance is more than just a showcase — it’s a cultural awakening, a tribute to the stories, struggles, and spirit that define the Filipino soul.

A Living Tribute to Heritage

From the vibrant and festive dances of Luzon to the sacred, ceremonial rhythms of Mindanao and Sulu, ADHIKA paints a sweeping picture of Filipino identity. With each movement, chant, and beat, the audience is taken on a journey across the archipelago — a journey steeped in memory, reverence, and pride.

Adding depth and authenticity to the performance are culture bearers representing the Philippines’ rich tapestry of traditions:

  • Kalinga: Ophelia Grace Addom and Karl Duane Cusay Bawer

  • Maguindanaon: Faisal Monal

  • Tausug: Airia Askalani Obeso

These individuals bring firsthand knowledge and lived experience to the stage, grounding the performance in the voices of indigenous communities.

About the Performing Groups

The Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe, founded in the 1940s at the Philippine Normal College, is the country’s longest-running cultural dance group. Now led by Creative Director Ronnie del Barrio, the troupe continues to train generations of artists while performing across the Philippines and around the world. Through annual workshops, public events, and stage productions, PB remains committed to honoring and preserving Filipino folk traditions.

Meanwhile, Parangal Dance Company, based in the Ramaytush Ohlone Territory (San Francisco, CA), champions the preservation of indigenous Philippine heritage within the diaspora. Founded on research and respect, Parangal promotes traditional attire, music, and dance — connecting Filipinos abroad to their roots while building bridges of understanding among diverse communities.

More Than a Performance

ADHIKA isn’t just about dance — it’s about remembrance. It’s about pride. It’s about passing the torch to the next generation, so that the rhythm of our ancestors continues to echo in modern hearts. Whether you’re reconnecting with your heritage or discovering it for the first time, this is an experience not to be missed.

Admission is free and open to all. Come early, bring loved ones, and prepare to be moved.
