Heroism: Always a Cause for Celebration #WUheroes

In time for National Heroes Day, 25 Filipino migrants were selected by Western Union to be known as Heroes for Better. The company spent months to look for those who take time to make a difference and have a positive impact in their communities.

During the launch at The Blackbird at the Nielson Tower, 3 of the heroes were present to tell us about their personal advocacies.
From Left: Nilo Beltran, Edmond Corpuz, and Nestor Puno
Nilo Beltran experienced working in Saipan. His migrant story started when he wanted to change his situation here in the country. Nilo is paying it forward with Skills Caravan, a non-profit organization that gives workshops to out-of-school youth and jail inmates, among other underprivileged groups. Nilo believes that when the Philippines becomes economically better than surrounding countries, it would be possible for us to stay here and not look for greener pastures elsewhere.

Edmond Corpuz (@moncorpuz) is the founder of Black Pencil Project (@PencilTreks), a group of volunteers that go to remote barrios in the country to provide the most basic of needs for education, pencils, as provided by donors. Mon's photography and social media knowledge has helped spread the cause. When asked what power Mon wanted to have, he said invisibility would make people focus on the actual helping and not on the volunteers. The heroism is greater than the hero.

Nestor Puno is a missionary who teaches in Japan and helps migrants who would need assistance because of their residency status. They are known as "bilogs," the equivalent of TNTs in the United States. "Walang bayani kung walang problema," Nestor said. It is but natural to help if there is a need.

Blackbird, of course, served a set that is was for heroes. Pictured here are the following:

Buffalo Mozzarella, Peperonata, Basil, Rocket with San Danielle Prosciutto
Porcini and Portobello Mushroom Cappuccino
Branzino Fillet, Braised Fennel and Confited Tomatoes with Lemon and Saffron
Chocolate Brownie and Burnt Butter Semi Freddo with Salted Caramel Popcorn.
