DO NOT MISS: Twin Bill Theater's #SuicideInc Reminds Us That It is #TimeToTalk About Mental Health
"Although there are 4.5 million depressed Filipinos – the highest in Southeast Asia — only one out of three who suffer from depression will seek the help of a specialist, according to WHO. One third will not even be aware of their condition."

Mental illness exists even if it is taboo in a society like ours. Studies suggest that suicide is increasing among the youth even if we still have one of the lowest, if not the lowest rates. This is the main issue that Suicide Incorporated would want the audience to think about. Twin Bill Theater advocates that it is #TimeToTalk about it.
Written by Andrew Hinderaker for Off-Broadway year 2010, this mix of comedy and tragedy imagines how it could be if there was a company who helps you in writing your suicide note. For this run, The PARC Foundation in San Juan houses all 10 performances from July 15, 2016 to July 31, 2016. What appears to resemble a dance studio is converted into a black box theater.
Even if the show is a one act play that runs for an hour and twenty minutes without intermission, the script is packed with much meaning. It tackles the heaviness of suicide, guilt, and other thoughts and emotions related to mental health from different sides without going too dark. This is thanks to well-timed comedic lines. Jay Pangilinan's sound design effectively adds to the tension as every scene lead to a more intense one. Joseph Matheu excels in lighting the stage as darkness and light become clues on how the story unravels as they are wonderfully directed by Steven Conde. All over the stage are words of different styles and lengths. Despite the differences in fonts and sizes, these famous last words draw you in and immediately set the mood as you enter the theater. Set design is by Ed Lacson
Being one who was suicidal and currently struggling with some mental issues, and having close friends who are battling illnesses, the play did take a stab into my gut and I had to take a few moments to recover. I imagine that it will make people more aware of who among them may have signs of mental illness. Some may even realize through the play that they need to seek professional help. As per Twin Bill Theater, psychologists will be available during talkbacks after each performance. It is prime time that more people know and start to understand what mental illness really is. Kudos to the whole production for initiating this and may efforts move forward!
Now it's your turn to move forward, purchase tickets, and witness this rare production! Have an open, curious mind and enjoy theater this month with Suicide Incorporated!
