Blue Repertory’s Next To Normal is a Testament to How Collaboration Produces Excellence #NextToNormalBlueRep

Image
Photo: Paw Castillo It was my first time to watch a production at the Gonzaga Hall of Ateneo. It was intimate but very welcoming, literally. Members of Blue Repertory welcomed me the moment I stepped on the third floor of the building. The hallway with what seemed to look like pews wasn't the best location to spend some time in but the theater company made best of what they could regarding the venue. The Fine Arts theater may be small but it housed the wonderful collaborative work that is Next To Normal. I have been going through tough times for a few years now and there would be instances where I would listen to the soundtrack of Next To Normal on Spotify to help me cope. What Blue Repertory gave me was an experience that I could hang on to when dark clouds gather over me. Despite physical limitations, excellence was seen in the acting and singing of everyone in the cast! Most of the interpretations were similar to the broadway rendition and I could say that this production ...

Matilda Is Pure Theater Magic! #MatildaTourMNL

From the moment you enter The Theatre at Solaire, you know that you are in for a good show. The glimpse of the stage, all those tiles and letters, are enough to get you excited. Yes, Roald Dahl wrote for kids and I’m not the actual target audience for the musical but I was totally captivated by Matilda from start to finish! Practically everything about the show was perfect! Transitions were quick, the whole set and costumes were the right amount of whimsical and the acting was engaging. The iconic scenes with the cake, pigtails, and chalk were pure theater magic! I was seated on the third row, able to see each movement but the tricks escaped me. Rather than being stuck into thinking how they did it, it was best that I just allow myself to enjoy the scenes. Make sure to get your tickets as soon as possible since the Royal Shakespeare Company does not come to Manila that often! Matilda will be at The Theatre until March 22.

Tabing Ilog Swings Into Its Opening Date A Bit Too Early #TabingIlog2020 #TabingIlogMusical

The iconic show of the late 90s/early 2000s is brought back to life this month through a musical at the Dolphy Theater inside ABS-CBN. The teen drama is said to have launched the careers of several successful actors during the following decade including John Lloyd Cruz and Jodi Sta. Maria. Having a cast of mostly new faces in showbiz, the musical seemingly promises to do the same, but not without a rocky start. Have you ever seen a remote control helicopter? Think of one hovering the ground for just about a feet or so for one hour and that'll give you an idea on how the first act was like. The narrative wasn't captivating and the reason you'd stay is that you were becoming desperate in wanting to know more from the scarce information provided. It tried to reintroduce the barkada but without really giving insight on who they really were individually except for a few details on who was interested with who. The second act needed as much polishing as the first as it was too...
