Tabing Ilog Swings Into Its Opening Date A Bit Too Early #TabingIlog2020 #TabingIlogMusical

The iconic show of the late 90s/early 2000s is brought back to life this month through a musical at the Dolphy Theater inside ABS-CBN. The teen drama is said to have launched the careers of several successful actors during the following decade including John Lloyd Cruz and Jodi Sta. Maria. Having a cast of mostly new faces in showbiz, the musical seemingly promises to do the same, but not without a rocky start.

Have you ever seen a remote control helicopter? Think of one hovering the ground for just about a feet or so for one hour and that'll give you an idea on how the first act was like. The narrative wasn't captivating and the reason you'd stay is that you were becoming desperate in wanting to know more from the scarce information provided. It tried to reintroduce the barkada but without really giving insight on who they really were individually except for a few details on who was interested with who. The second act needed as much polishing as the first as it was too cramped with multiple issues that would have been more effective if it was properly introduced much earlier. It felt like the material wanted to say too much. Something that a leader with the right vision could work on.
Among the Star Hunt talents, Kiara Takahashi was most notable during the press show.
The musical is not without gems. The music is excellent and engaging, a trademark of Vincent A. de Jesus. The veteran theater actors were strong in their roles as expected. A standout in the cast that I saw was Kiara Takahashi. It seemed like she took extra steps by studying who Eds is as I was feeling her project Kaye Abad's original portrayal. Most of the new actors were good in their roles as well. Some though may have been under utilized. Again, something that a leader who is prepared to cast out the right vision on the production could easily improve.

The run just started and even if there are hitches, I am hopeful that the river could be saved.
Tabing Ilog: The Musical will run from March 7 to April 26 at the ABS-CBN Dolphy Theater at the ABS- CBN compound in Quezon City.
