NCCA, City of Manila unveil the mural art of newly renovated Lagusnilad Underpass

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) led by its chairman Arsenio J. Lizaso, executive director Al Ryan S. Alejandre, deputy executive director Marichu G. Tellano, and supervising officer for administration Bernan Joseph R. Corpuz, in partnership with the City Government of Manila led by Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso through its Department of Engineering and Public Works, unveil the “Masigasig na Maynila” mural located at the Manila City Hall – Intramuros underpass on August 24, 2020 as part of the city’s Ang Bagong Maynila Program. 

“Ang Bagong Maynila Program” of the City Government of Manila aims to redevelop the Manila City Hall – Intramuros Underpass and part of the redesigning standards based on the modernity is by showcasing a mural art at the longer facade and intended for the community, by the community. Through the mural art, the project intends to improve the current condition of the underpass, showcase the rich history and cultural heritage of Manila, encourage the participation of the community for the redevelopment and preservation of the underpass, attract tourists and visit the underpass with the help of social media platforms, and instill a sense of culturally significant locations linked to the underpass such as the Manila City Hall, Intramuros, Bonifacio Shrine and National Museum of the Philippines.

“Masigasig na Maynila” is a mural by the art collective, Gerilya, showcasing the rich history of the Philippines, specifically Manila by highlighting the development of the city and the history of the country such as the Spanish colonial period, Philippine-American War, World War II, the First Quarter Storm and the Martial Law, and the present. The mural also honored the heroes of the history and the modern-day heroes: the doctors, nurses, riders, and other frontliners who lead the fight against the pandemic.

Gerilya is an artist collective formed in 2008. Its three original members - Jano, Kube, and Zap - hail from the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City. Gerilya is involved in various art related activities and experimental ventures such as comics, street art, graffiti animation, fine art exhibitions, and illustration commissions. They classify their works as falling into three main categories: political, socio-cultural, and historical.

The newly renovated underpass showcases a Spanish-themed features designed by Arch. Antonio Toledo. There are vertical gardens installed at the Manila City Hall and Intramuros entrances of the underpass; interactive and informational motion sensor and touch screen wall, which is accessible to the passersby; and the famous Books from Underground also comes back at the Lagusnilad Underpass.
