Zsazsa Zaturnnah is a classic in my generation that has garnered the status of what could be considered a cult classic. Carlo Vergara created a provocative and progressive superhero whose story furthered the LGBTQIA+ discussion at a time when it was a struggle to be part of the community. Originally published in 2002, the genius material persists and thrives in different mediums, and now in 2023, it finds its way to the stage again.
Yes, there may be some differences in the struggles of my generation, but as a community, we know full well how it is to stand and demand our voices to be heard. Our society may have transformed throughout the decades, but Zaturnnah has come prepared to be introduced to today's generation.
At the helm of this transformation is Director Miss Maramara, whose theater craft I have admired ever since I've seen her. Swallowing the mysterious stone this time is the undeniably talented Kim Molina, one of the classic Aileens of Rak of Aegis. Molina is one of the theater artists who can proudly claim they have also made it in TV and film. Zsazsa’s human form, Ada, is alternated by Phi Palmos, Adrian Lindayag, and Sean Ocrisma. Joshua Cabiladas, Almond Bolante, and Robert Bradley Hao will sing best friend Didi into truth. The Dodongs for this run are Juan Carlos Gallano, Jude Matthew Servilla, and Elian Dominguez. Carlin Maximo, Jelena Evangelista, Dani Tan, and Heart Romero are the iconic Amazonistas. They are headed by their Queen Femina Suarestellar Baroux, played by Kakki Teodoro and Anyah de Guzman. Members of the Blue Repertory consist of the ensemble.
During the press conference, it was great to talk with fellow press members about how we could relate to the graphic novel and how iconic the musical is. I daresay that it is the best version of the material next to the original. Yes, it was perfect for the early 2000s. Still, the cast and the production have also convinced me that their artistic choices to update the masterpiece would be a refreshing take for discerning fans and those discovering Zsazsa Zaturnnah for the first time. Indeed, I am ready to be part of Generation Zaturnnah!
Before you close this window, let me credit the always-amazing Vincent A. de Jesus for his musical direction. Tata Tuviera heads Production and Costume design for this run.
