Arturo Luz Returns to SM Megamall with “Streamlined II” Exhibit This June
The legacy of National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz takes center stage once again with "Streamlined II," a rare and highly anticipated exhibition running from June 3 to 16 at the Art Center, 4th Floor, SM Megamall Building A, Mandaluyong City.
Presented by Renaissance Art Gallery and curated by artist-critic Cid Reyes, the exhibit builds on the success of its earlier iteration, further exploring the timeless visual language and structural elegance that define Luz’s iconic style. This second edition offers visitors a renewed appreciation of Luz’s pursuit of formal purity, disciplined composition, and minimalism that continues to influence generations of Filipino artists.
A Singular Vision in Modern Abstraction
Luz, declared a National Artist in 1997, began his journey in art as early as 17 years old. Inspired by the quiet restraint of Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo and the imaginative line work of Paul Klee, Luz developed his own aesthetic vocabulary—a linear world of cyclists, jugglers, musicians, Oriental ceramics, and cityscapes distilled into refined shapes and understated colors.
Over the years, his exploration of visual purity evolved from figurative simplicity to complete abstraction. “Streamlined II” will spotlight this trajectory, featuring works that echo Luz’s signature themes: the harmony of forms, the spatial interplay between shapes, and his unparalleled eye for balance.
His preference for non-traditional materials, from burlap and plywood to broken tiles, pushed the boundaries of Philippine visual art, bridging modernist ideals with an almost spiritual reverence for space and surface.
Landscapes of the Mind
By the 1980s, Luz began to expand his subject matter through travels across Asia and India, absorbing architectural marvels and sacred spaces that would later emerge in his compositions as mythic temples, palaces, and fortifications. Rendered in soft monochromes and earthen tones—chrome yellow, burnt sienna, bronze—these works reflect a more meditative phase in his career, transforming geographic memory into a visual rhythm.
More Than a Painter
Beyond the canvas, Arturo Luz played a transformative role in Philippine art administration. From establishing the Luz Gallery to leading the Museum of Philippine Art, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Design Center of the Philippines, Luz devoted his life to shaping both artistic vision and institutional progress.
As art critic Recaredo Demetillo once wrote in 1951: “He distorts with intuitive rightness and grace. In other words, he is a real artist.”
Opening Night Details
The exhibit will kick off with a cocktail reception on June 3 at 6:30 PM. Guests are encouraged to RSVP by June 2. Attendees will also have the chance to acquire a limited-edition monograph, with design and layout by Dopy Doplon and photography by Wig Tysmans, which beautifully captures the highlights of Luz’s body of work.
