A Season Ready to Bloom: The Sandbox Collective Announces Spring Awakening’s Cast

There are seasons when the theater calendar feels like an exhale. Then there are nights when news drops like a warm pulse against the quiet, reshaping the hours that follow.

The Sandbox Collective does exactly that.

As the company approaches its twelfth year and readies its 2026 season, it sets the stage for an early Spring in Makati. The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell becomes the cradle of a revival that feels urgent, present, and deeply resonant. The full cast of Spring Awakening has been unveiled, and with it comes the promise of a production built for this moment.

This is a revival that steps into the room with conviction. A right-now Spring. A bruising and beautiful reckoning.

Where Silence is Rewarded and Curiosity is Punished

With book and lyrics by Steven Sater, music by Duncan Sheik, and based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, Spring Awakening remains one of the most unflinching examinations of youth ever staged. It is a work of aching contradictions. Tender but unrelenting. Quiet but explosive. A story that returns because the world keeps circling back to the same wounds.

Director Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan draws a line between the musical’s late-19th-century roots and the moral climate faced by young Filipinos today. He points to modern gatekeepers of control. Political elites. Conservative religious sectors. A parentocracy that fears the evolution of its own children. Structures that reward obedience and punish curiosity.

The stories inside this musical mirror the very challenges shadowing young people in 2025. Teen pregnancy. Abuse. Mental health struggles. Self-harm. Pain that hides behind discipline and silence. In true Sandbox fashion, this revival does not revisit the material for nostalgia. It revives it to confront.

Titans and Torchbearers: A Cast Built for Impact

This production draws strength from a rare balance: towering industry icons sharing the stage with a rising generation ready to step into the heat of the spotlight.

The Adult Woman will be portrayed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Ana Abad Santos.

Menchu continues to anchor Philippine theater with grace and command, carrying a career that includes roles such as Eva Perón, Fosca, Mrs. Lovett, Diana Goodman, and most recently, the title role in Singapore’s Kimberly Akimbo.

Ana Abad Santos returns with her signature blend of edge and vulnerability. Known for unforgettable performances such as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire and Candida in Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, she brings both depth and grit.

Completing the adult roles is Audie Gemora as Adult Man. With more than seventy productions under his belt and multiple Gawad Buhay awards, he remains one of Philippine theater’s most formidable forces.

Taking the stage alongside these luminaries is a vibrant ensemble of young artists stepping into roles that demand fearlessness and instinct.

Omar Uddin brings experience from The Lion King International Tour and multiple Philippine productions. Sheena Belarmino, fresh from One More Chance: The Musical and Next to Normal, steps into Wendla with undeniable star power.

A Creative Team Ready to Split the Dark Open

Pamintuan is joined by an artistic team carved for a work that needs honesty, rigor, and care.

Ejay Yatco shapes the musical landscape. Nunoy Van Den Burgh choreographs movement that is both grounded and explosive. Missy Maramara ensures intimacy is portrayed with safety and truth. Wika Nadera designs a world that holds silence and rebellion in equal measure. Raven Ong crafts the costumes. D Cortezano lights the emotional terrain. Aron Roca directs the sonic world. Gabbi Campomanes assists direction. Salve Villarosa builds the dramaturgical backbone. Sheik Completado oversees technical direction. Jaydee Jasa completes the aesthetic with hair and makeup.

The team suggests a production that will push, unearth, and illuminate.

A New Home for a New Spring

Spring Awakening will open The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati. The venue’s intimacy feels fated for material that thrives in closeness. Every breath. Every silence. Every confession.

The run spans February 13 to March 22, 2026. Tickets are available through Ticket2Me.

This revival arrives as a mirror for the young who feel unheard. A reminder for adults who forget they were once young. A call for tenderness in a world that still punishes curiosity.

Spring has come. And this one has pulse, teeth, heat, and truth.

Welcome to Spring Awakening.
Welcome to the bloom.
