The Egg Has Hatched And Maniacal Is Back!

December 15, 2015 marked the launch of Egg Theater Company with the staging of their adapted work, Maniacal.
Egg Theater Company is composed of theater veterans Kristine Balmes, Renante Bustamante, Martha Comia, George de Jesus III, Maria Marasigan, Paolo O'Hara, and Alvin Trono. Director George de Jesus III narrates the idea of hatching Egg started when they were doing Maniacal during the Fringe Manila earlier this year. Out of their conceptualization came the vision of producing straight plays with a contemporary setting in the Filipino language using original materials, translations or adaptations of both modern and classic works geared to showcase the Filipino actor.*

It is but fitting that their first production, Maniacal, showcases the full glory of the Filipino theater actor. Maniacal is an adaptation of Moliere's Les Femmes Savantes that transports the script to the Philippine Theater scene today.
Staged at Pinapple Lab, the venue gives the actors a chance to involve the audience in the scene. They are almost literally right in front of you. Be prepared to look around as they use practically the whole space, even the ones beyond the seats.

Martha Comia, Via Antonio, Jojo Riguerra, Mara Marasigan, Paolo O'Hara, Mayen Cadd, Nel Gomez, and Renante Bustamante comprise of the very vibrant cast of this satire. If you have been exposed to Philippine Theater, this play is definitely for you. You'll hear practically confirmations of rumors, see the stereotypes of the industry all in one production. Even if this is your first Philippine play, Maniacal will keep you in stitches. Be entertained and end this year with much laughter and maybe a better grasp of the local scene. Watching it felt like having an exclusive pass at the most private of preparations for an upcoming production.

Catch Maniacal on December 20, 2PM and 7PM, at Pineapple Lab.

  1. This was so sanitized and unfit to be called a homage to Philippine Theater. I hope it told of a certain university theater group whose current artistic director mauled a student several years ago. A former artistic director of theirs (in his senior years now) even stabbed the temple of a female student (now a known TV and film actress) with a pencil just because she brought a pen.

How about the theater company whose artistic director is an internet pornstar? The people there all have fake noses as if they're all fans of the now-defunct TV show the swan. This is a multi-awarded, family-owned theater company supported by entertainment writers and who bought their awards with money earned from people's back working for a mere 350/php show while the Ts party and buy expensive stuff (mostly food and liquor).
