Alice Reyes’ Carmina Burana Returns with PPO and MADz on June 14-15
Get ready to be swept away by a mesmerizing fusion of music and motion as the iconic Carmina Burana returns to the stage! Renowned choreographer Alice Reyes brings Carl Orff’s beloved cantata to life once again in collaboration with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) and the Philippine Madrigal Singers (MADz), featuring soprano Lara Maigue. Mark your calendars for June 14th and 15th at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater for an unforgettable performance that promises to captivate audiences with its exuberance and beauty.
Carmina Burana holds a special place in the hearts of many, and Reyes’ adaptation adds a new layer of depth and creativity to this timeless masterpiece. Inspired by goliardic verses and Orff’s majestic score, Reyes weaves a tale of community, joy, and love through vibrant, sensual, and pagan-inspired movements. This restaging will feature live music by the PPO and MADz, accompanied by the enchanting vocals of Lara Maigue. Adding to the spectacle are the mesmerizing sets and costumes designed by the late National Artist for Theater Design, Salvador Bernal.
Since its premiere in 1975, Carmina Burana has seen several restagings, each one breathing new life into this iconic work of art. This latest rendition promises to be no exception, offering audiences a chance to experience the magic of Carmina Burana in a fresh and exciting way.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! The program also includes Reyes’ Dugso, a captivating work inspired by the rituals of the tribes of Bukidnon, Mindanao, set to the choral piece Ding Ding nga Diyawan by National Artist for Music, Dr. Ramon Santos. First performed in 1972, Dugso is a groundbreaking collaboration between two National Artists and is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who witness it.
Additionally, audiences will be treated to Norman Walker’s romantic pas de deux, Summer’s End, and Augustus ‘Bam’ Damian III’s After Whom, showcasing the company’s versatility and dynamism in neo-classical, modern, and contemporary ballet.
Presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, with the support of Senator Pia Cayetano, this production is a celebration of Filipino artistry and talent. Joining the cast are the Kilyawan Boys Choir and dance trainees from the University of the East’s Silanganan Dance Troupe, adding even more depth and richness to the performance.
