Discover the Magic of Filipino Folklore with Alice Reyes Dance Philippines’ “Mga Kuwento ni Juan Tamad”

For generations, the tales of Juan Tamad have been a source of amusement, reflection, and cultural pride in the Philippines. This November, Alice Reyes Dance Philippines (ARDP) brings these timeless stories to life in a whole new way with their latest creation, “Mga Kuwento ni Juan Tamad,” a dance production tailored specifically for young audiences.

A New Chapter in Children’s Dance Theater

“Mga Kuwento ni Juan Tamad” marks a special milestone for ARDP as it expands its repertoire to embrace children’s dance theater. This full-length work is the brainchild of choreographer Erl Sorilla, who not only crafted the choreography but also penned the book, making this project his first major endeavor of this kind. Adding to its enchantment is the mesmerizing musical score composed by the award-winning Toto Sorioso, known for his rich and heartfelt storytelling through music.

The production also benefits from the expertise of Loy Arcenas, a renowned Filipino director and Broadway designer, whose sets and costumes promise to transform the stage into a world of wonder and folklore. Under the guidance of National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes and ARDP Artistic Director Ronelson Yadao, the show aims to captivate and educate, making it an unforgettable experience for children.

The Story Unfolds: Juan Tamad’s Quest

At the heart of the production is Juan Tamad himself, the well-known “misunderstood” boy, portrayed by Renzen Arboleda. With his loyal monkey companion, Matsing (played by Dan Dayo), Juan embarks on a journey to retrieve the village’s most precious possession, the ‘Gintong Niyog,’ stolen by the greedy ‘Buwaya,’ played by Earl John Arisola.

The narrative beautifully intertwines classic Filipino fables, introducing characters like Pagong (portrayed by John Ababon), Kuneho (played by Monica Gana), Paboreal (performed by Krislynne Buri), and Gamu-gamu (portrayed by trainees Gianna Hervas and Crizza Urmeneta). Each character not only adds color to Juan’s adventure but also imparts moral lessons that shape his journey toward growth and resilience.

A Theatrical Treat for Schools and Students

Designed with students in mind, this production aligns seamlessly with the Grade 1-10 and High School curriculum. By showcasing elements that relate to Filipino, Arts, Music, Humanities, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Personal Development, Araling Panlipunan, and Physical Education, it offers an educational experience that’s both captivating and enriching. Through its blend of dance and storytelling, “Mga Kuwento ni Juan Tamad” nurtures an appreciation for Philippine culture and values, all while sparking the imagination of young minds.
