Tutti Trombone Concert: A Unique Fusion of Brass Excellence and Cultural Heritage
The FEU Center for the Arts is set to captivate audiences with “Tutti Trombone: A Collaborative Concert,” an extraordinary showcase that unites acclaimed trombone musicians from across Asia and North America with the vibrant talents of local student artists. Scheduled for November 18, 2024, at 6 PM, this event will take place in the iconic FEU Auditorium, now celebrating its 75th anniversary.
A Celebration of Brass: Local and International Talent Take Center Stage
“Tutti Trombone” continues the legacy of previous “Tutti” concerts—such as Flutti, Guitarri, Celli, and Harpi—with an innovative program centered on brass and percussion. At its heart are two standout ensembles: the Thomasian Trombone Choir and the FEU Drum and Bugle Corps (DBC).
The Thomasian Trombone Choir, led by Ricson Poonin, acting principal trombonist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, is composed of trombone students from the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. This young ensemble made its debut earlier in the year, and its musicians bring a fresh, ambitious spirit to each performance.
The FEU Drum and Bugle Corps, with nearly nine decades of tradition, is Far Eastern University’s official marching band. Under the direction of Kevin Castelo, a percussion master’s graduate from the University of Indiana, and Assistant Artistic Director Koowie Relevo, the FEU DBC showcases student artists from various non-music academic backgrounds. Together, these two ensembles present a rare collaboration, blending the distinct timbres and traditions of brass and percussion.
Notable Guest Musicians Add Global Dimension
Elevating the concert further are three notable guest artists. Thanapoom Sriwiset, Associate Principal Bass Trombone of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, is a distinguished brass musician and educator with a dynamic performance history across Asia and Europe. With experience performing alongside the Grazer Philharmoniker in Austria, Sriwiset’s participation will add a level of sophistication and technical prowess to the evening’s program.
Ethan Santos, a Filipino-American trombonist and bandleader based in New Orleans, will bring a unique jazz influence to the Tutti Trombone lineup. Santos, who teaches at Tulane University, is celebrated for his performances at New Orleans jazz festivals and educational clinics across the United States, including the Jazz & Heritage Foundation and the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp.
Completing the guest lineup is Koowie Relevo, Assistant Artistic Director of the FEU DBC. A “multi-faceted musician” as described by The Manila Times, Relevo has represented the Philippines in international music competitions and continues to inspire with his genre-spanning direction of local musical productions.
The Historic FEU Auditorium: A Fitting Venue
As it celebrates its 75th anniversary, the FEU Auditorium is a cultural landmark that has seen some of the Philippines’ most significant performances. “Tutti Trombone” will not only contribute to this storied venue’s legacy but also connect its historical roots with new artistic voices, presenting a dynamic fusion of tradition and innovation.
With free admission, this concert offers an opportunity to experience an unforgettable performance, a true celebration of music, culture, and collaboration.
