A Stage for Tomorrow’s Virtuosos: MSO Concerto Competition 2025

There is something electric about the idea of a young musician stepping into the light, not just to play, but to stand alone with an orchestra at their back. For decades, the Manila Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition has been exactly that moment—a passageway where talent meets destiny, where artistry is given its first grand platform. And now, it returns.

The MSO Concerto Competition 2025 is calling once more, carrying with it a legacy that stretches back to the 1960s and 1970s, when the very same event became the launchpad for some of the country’s most extraordinary soloists. It is a tradition steeped in history, yet forever looking forward.

A Tradition Renewed

This year’s competition is more than just a contest. It is an invitation. A chance for the next wave of Filipino musicians to rise, to grow in artistry, and to discover the thrill of standing centerstage with the MSO. The orchestra is not only honoring its past but also planting seeds for the future.

The competition is open to Filipino citizens and foreign students currently studying in the Philippines, with categories spread across age levels:

  • Level A: 12 years old and below (3 winners)

  • Level B: 13 to 18 years old (3 winners)

  • Level C: 19 to 25 years old (3 winners)

Across strings, woodwinds, brass, and piano, the search is wide and welcoming. Whether it is the fiery sweep of a violin, the golden lift of a trumpet, or the intimacy of a piano’s touch, the stage awaits.

What It Takes

Every applicant must prepare one complete movement from a concerto of the Baroque, Classical, or Romantic masters. It must be played from memory, a true test of not just technique, but commitment. The submission requires a video recording, unedited, captured in a single take no older than two months. Piano accompaniment is recommended, though not mandatory.

The application form, proof of age, and a ₱1,000 fee complete the process. All entries are due by October 8, 2025.

Then comes the listening. A panel of MSO musicians and guest adjudicators will pour over every performance, weighing not just mastery, but the spark of something more—musicality, expression, and the kind of artistry that transcends notes on a page.

The Prize Beyond the Prize

For the nine chosen winners, the reward is not simply a title. It is the opportunity to step into the grandeur of performance, to stand with the Manila Symphony Orchestra itself. On October 15, 2025, 7:30 PM at the GSIS Theater in Pasay City, the Concert of Winners will take place. Each winner will perform the same concerto movement that first captured the judges’ attention.

This is the truest gift of the competition: the chance to transform preparation into performance, and performance into memory. To feel the swell of an orchestra at one’s back and know that, if only for a movement, the music belongs entirely to you.

Carrying the Flame Forward

In the end, this competition is not about victory alone. It is about legacy, about giving today’s generation a platform as meaningful as the one that lifted their predecessors decades ago. It is about building continuity in a nation’s musical life, so that every year, new names rise to carry the flame of classical music in the Philippines.

For those ready to take on the challenge, the time is now. Applications close October 8, 2025. For the audience, tickets to the Concert of Winners are already available at Ticketworld: ₱2,000 for Orchestra Center, ₱1,000 for Orchestra Sides, and ₱500 for the Balcony.

When the lights come up on October 15, it will not only be a concert. It will be the sound of tomorrow, already beginning to play.
