“ROMEO AND JULIET, The Musical” — Love, Tragedy, and the Youth That Burns Brightly

When Romeo and Juliet meets a generation raised on pop anthems and playlists of heartbreak, the result is something unexpectedly fresh yet faithful, a love letter to both Shakespeare and the restless energy of today’s young dreamers.

As Kids Acts Philippines and MINT College prepare to raise the curtain at St. Cecilia’s Hall, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, the upcoming “ROMEO AND JULIET, The Musical” (October 22 and 23, 2025) promises not just a retelling, but a rediscovery of the Bard’s most famous tragedy through the eyes and voices of Gen Z.

🎶 A Fusion of Old Soul and New Pulse

Edited and lyrically enriched by Luigi Nacario, with music by Eugene Belbis, this version blends the ornate beauty of Shakespeare’s text with melodies that move between the East and West, classic and contemporary. Director Meldrig Costuna, together with Nacario, preserves the play’s poetic integrity while making it accessible to young minds who might otherwise meet Shakespeare only through textbooks.

Every dialogue is sung, every emotion translated into rhythm. The fusion of period costumes, authentic Shakespearean phrasing, and modern musical sensibilities creates a theatrical paradox that works: tradition glowing under a modern light.

💔 Verona Reimagined

Noel Comia Jr.

In this retelling, Verona breathes with youthful intensity. Romeo and Juliet are not just lovers; they are symbols of every impulsive heart that dares to love despite the odds.

Noel Comia Jr. leads the cast as Romeo, with Chelsea Sangco and AC Gamo alternating as Juliet, a casting choice that highlights the universality of young love. Around them is a tapestry of familiar names and promising newcomers: Ces Dela Cruz-Guevara as the Nurse, Carlo Fabillar as Mercutio, Jhonsen Bognot as Tybalt, and Denmark Brinces as the ill-fated Count Paris.

The show keeps the classic feud alive, yet the pulse of the music hints that reconciliation is possible, that tragedy too can teach peace.

🎓 Theater as Classroom, Stage as Textbook

What makes this collaboration special is its intent. Kids Acts Philippines and MINT College position the production as a season offering for young adults, not merely a spectacle but a lesson in literature, empathy, and art.
Here, the aim is understanding: to show students and youth audiences that Shakespeare’s language is not an artifact but a living thing, capable of rhythm, laughter, and heartbreak that still feels like their own.

🌹 Curtain Call

With tickets available through Ticket2Me (₱1,200) and a press preview on October 23, 6:00 PM, Romeo and Juliet, The Musical stands ready to bridge centuries. It is proof that love stories, however tragic, never really die; they simply find new melodies.

So when the lights dim and the overture begins at St. Cecilia’s Hall, remember:
“What’s in a name?” Maybe everything, if it is spoken, sung, and lived by a new generation that believes in love anyway.
