A Brief Spectacle: Carmen and Other Spirits Unveils in a Two-Day Dance Extravaganza

In a whirlwind of grace and passion, Alice Reyes Dance Philippines returns with a limited two-day run that promises to captivate audiences and spark contemplation on pressing societal issues. "Carmen and Other Spirits," a mixed bill of four powerful choreographies, is set to grace the stage at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater on October 20-21.

Carmen: A Dance of Love and Loss

Headlining the program is "Carmen," a reimagination of Prosper Merimeé's timeless novella by National Artist for Dance, Alice Reyes. This rendition takes a unique perspective, narrating the tragic tale from the viewpoint of Don Jose. Richardson Yadao steps into the conflicted shoes of Don Jose, while Macel Dofitas embodies the fiery Carmen—a portrayal hailed by Edna Vida, the original Carmen, as a fantastic pairing on stage.

Reyes' Carmen breaks free from the conventional narrative, presenting a Carmen who is not a mere archetype but a feminist icon. Vida's endorsement of Dofitas and Yadao as the lead pair adds a layer of excitement and anticipation to this riveting dance creation.

Other Spirits: A Mosaic of Contemporary Commentary

The production extends beyond Carmen, weaving a tapestry of societal reflections through three additional choreographies:

  1. Swimming the Ilog Pasig by Alden Lugnasin: A provocative social and environmental commentary, this piece echoes synchronized swimming movements, drawing attention to the relationship between people and the polluted waters of the River Pasig.
  2. Two by Ronelson Yadao: The Artistic Director of ARDP explores the interdependency of individuals in a visually striking work that emphasizes the importance of connection and collaboration.
  3. NOW by Lester Reguindin: Inspired by the bold activism of Greta Thurnberg, this piece transitions from its original film format to a stage adaptation, challenging the audience to confront urgent environmental issues.
