Cultural Symphony: NAMCYA Winners Mesmerize Xiamen with Diverse Musical Tapestry
In a celebration of cultural diversity and musical brilliance, the winners of the 2022 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) recently took center stage at the historic Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, China. The event, titled "A NAMCYA International Presentation: The Winners’ Concert in Xiamen," was a collaboration between NAMCYA and the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen, bringing together young Filipino talents to captivate a diverse audience.
On the night of October 8, 2023, a full house gathered to witness the exceptional talents of Ms. Nerissa de Juan (soprano), Mr. Adrian Cristobal (guitar), Mr. Deiniel Sanchez (horn), Mr. Cedric Rafael Uson (violin), Mr. Theodore Julius Tan (violin), and Mr. Reynaldo Gendrano (piano). Together, they delivered a mesmerizing repertoire featuring a blend of Filipino and classical music masterpieces spanning various periods.
The audience was treated to a musical journey that included classical gems such as "Preludio from Partita 3 in Major BWV 1006" and "Sevillana Fantasia," as well as heartfelt renditions of Filipino favorites like "Maalaala Mo Kaya" and "Bahay Kubo." The climax of the evening was marked by a surprise encore—a heartwarming rendition of "Waves of Gulangyu," evoking a thunderous applause from the teary-eyed spectators.
NAMCYA President Dr. Renato Lucas, accompanied by program director Dr. Ronan Ferrer, expressed that this concert was not only a celebration of the organization's 50th anniversary but also a historic moment as NAMCYA's first international presentation outside of ASEAN. Dr. Lucas conveyed his pride in the young artists and their ability to showcase the rich musical heritage of the Philippines on an international stage.
In her opening remarks, Xiamen PCG Consul General Maria Antonina Mendoza-Oblena, a pianist herself, emphasized the universal language of music and the significance of cultural exchanges. She reminded the audience that "where words fail, music speaks," highlighting the power of music to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers.
The 571-seat concert hall was graced by an array of distinguished guests, including Mr. Li Lin (Director General of the Fujian Foreign Affairs Office), Mr. Zhuang Rongliang (Vice Mayor of Xiamen Municipal People’s Government), Mr. Hong Taiwei (Vice Mayor of Zhangzhou Municipal People’s Government), and Mr. Chng Tze Chia (Consul General of the Consulate General of Singapore in Xiamen). The presence of high-ranking Chinese officials, business leaders, art and music enthusiasts, students, and media personalities underscored the significance of the cultural exchange.
DG Li Lin, who previously served as the Chinese Consul General in Davao, expressed his enthusiasm for witnessing a NAMCYA performance in Fujian province. He described the concert as a "powerful testament to the profound friendship and cultural ties between China and the Philippines." The event served as a bridge, connecting hearts through the universal language of music.
The success of "A NAMCYA International Presentation: The Winners’ Concert in Xiamen" was made possible through the cooperation of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Fujian Provincial People’s Government and partnerships with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, ASEAN Culture and Economic Exchange Center, and Studio Vio. These collaborations highlighted the importance of fostering international connections through the medium of art and music.
The concert in Xiamen was not merely a performance; it was a celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and the enduring power of music to transcend boundaries and build bridges between nations. The young Filipino artists left an indelible mark on the hearts of the audience, creating memories that will resonate for years to come.
