Puso ng Pasko: A Heartfelt Return and a Grand Tour
The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas than with the return of the all-Filipino Christmas ballet, "Puso ng Pasko." Presented by Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, this festive extravaganza is set to grace the stage of the Metropolitan Theater on December 1-2, promising a magical experience for audiences of all ages.
"Puso ng Pasko" is not just a ballet; it's a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the Philippines. Conceived by the brilliant minds behind RAMA, HARI, National Artists Alice Reyes and Ryan Cayabyab, this production seamlessly weaves together Cayabyab's enchanting musical arrangements of timeless Filipino Christmas carols and the dynamic choreography of a talented group of rising Filipino choreographers mentored by Alice Reyes herself.
Directed and choreographed by ARDP Artistic Director Ronelson Yadao, in collaboration with co-choreographers Erl Sorilla, Lester Reguindin, AL Abraham, John Ababon, Danilo Dayo, and Bonnie Guerrero, "Puso ng Pasko" brings to life a unique blend of contemporary dance infused with influences from traditional Filipino festivals.
The collaboration extends beyond the stage, with librettist Eljay Castro Deldoc and Film Director Carlos Siguion-Reyna working on the script and story, while Ricardo Eric Cruz takes charge of production design and Barbara Tan-Tiongco handles lighting design. Together, they breathe life into this new Filipino Christmas ballet classic.
The narrative of "Puso ng Pasko" unfolds as Lolo Val, now residing in New Jersey, reminisces with his young granddaughter Angelita about the enchanting Christmases of his youth in Tres Reyes with his barkada. The production pays homage to beloved Filipino traditions, including Simbang Gabi, indulging in bibingka and puto bumbong, and vibrant plazas adorned with parols and festive decorations.
The ballet also serves as a tribute to various festivals across the Philippine islands, showcasing the beauty of The Belenisimo of Tarlac, The Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, The Higantes Festival of Rizal, Sayaw sa Bangko of Pangasinan, and the Pandang Gitab of Oriental Mindoro. Additionally, it honors cultural traditions such as the Rigodon de Honor.
Having premiered at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2022, "Puso ng Pasko" garnered rave reviews from audiences, who hailed it as "The quintessential Filipino Christmas ballet" and "The Filipino Nutcracker to be restaged and reinterpreted every year."
After its Metropolitan Theater performances on December 1-2, "Puso ng Pasko" embarks on a Major Luzon Tour in December 2023. In collaboration with Local Government officials, the production is set to captivate audiences in Angeles City, Pampanga; Muñoz City, Nueva Ecija; Tarlac City, Tarlac; and Iligan City, Isabela. Following these, the ballet will grace the City of Makati and the prestigious Malacañang Palace.
