Celebrating Filipino Values Month: NCCA Wraps Up Bálay Pinoy in Cebu

In the heart of Lahug Elementary School in Cebu, the 13th of November marked a day of joy, learning, and cultural celebration as the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) concluded its Bálay Pinoy program. Designed to commemorate Filipino Values Month, the event aimed to instill a deep appreciation for the diverse traditions and cultures of the Philippines.

Before the official commencement of the program, the school grounds buzzed with excitement as students engaged in various activities, from vibrant face painting to savoring free Filipino snacks. The festivities kicked off with the rhythmic beats of the Nexus Dos Tribal Band, setting the tone for a day filled with cultural richness.

Dr. Maricon M. Gumba, Public Schools District Supervisor of North District 3, extended a warm welcome to the students, teachers, and guests gathered at Lahug Elementary School. The CBD College Dance Troupe graced the stage with a mesmerizing performance of the traditional Cebuano dance, Sinulog, adding a touch of local flair to the festivities.

Mr. Arvin Manuel Villalon, Commissioner of the NCCA Subcommission on the Arts and lead researcher for the NCCA Study on Filipino Values, provided a glimpse into the significance of learning about Filipino values. He emphasized the importance of appreciating and celebrating the diverse traditions and cultures encapsulated in Bálay Pinoy.

Visayan culture took center stage as Ms. Maria Ann Saragena, the School and District Cultural Coordinator, guided students in the performance of "Panulad Isda," an occupational dance originating from Cadiz Negros Occidental. The program also featured a meet and greet with Heneral Tuna, accompanied by a ceremonial turnover of the Heneral Tuna Picture Book.

The following day, on the 14th of November 2023, the NCCA continued its mission at Lapu-Lapu City Central Elementary School with a school visit and storytelling activity. Through Bálay Pinoy, students were given the opportunity to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Filipino values, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for their cultural heritage.

Bálay Pinoy is part of the NCCA's flagship programs, aligning with Presidential Proclamation No. 479 signed on October 25, 1994. This proclamation designates November of every year as Filipino Values Month, a nationwide celebration supported by various organizations, including KLUBI Weavers Organization.

The month-long celebration aims to utilize the NCCA Values Formation Program materials as effective learning and teaching tools. By doing so, the NCCA seeks to contribute to the enhancement of the Philippine social fabric, fostering a society built on trust and resilience through the inculcation of values that promote the common good.

As the program came to a close, Dr. Lily Ann S. Go, the School Principal of Lahug Elementary School, presided over the awarding of the winners of the Heneral Tuna Traditional Poster Making Contest. The event not only celebrated Filipino values but also empowered the youth to express their cultural pride through art.

In the spirit of unity and cultural appreciation, the NCCA's Bálay Pinoy in Cebu served as a shining example of how education, art, and celebration can come together to strengthen the social fabric of a nation.
