Celebrating Filipino Fashion and Art: Edgar San Diego's Solo Exhibits in New York and Hawaii

Renowned fashion designer Edgar San Diego is preparing for an exciting solo fashion and art exhibit titled "HIBLA AT PINTA" in New York and Hawaii. Organized by the Philippine American Friendship Community, Inc. (PAFCOM) and the Philippine Consulate General of New York, the exhibit will showcase San Diego's exquisite paintings, artworks, and designs created using authentic Philippine materials and fabrics. This blog post explores the journey of Edgar San Diego, his passion for fashion and art, and his upcoming exhibits.

With a successful career spanning over 40 years, Edgar San Diego's fascination with painting emerged when he skillfully incorporated delicate floral motifs into his stunning Filipiniana gowns. During the 1980s, hand-painting in fashion gained immense popularity, with other designers seeking San Diego's expertise to enhance their creations with his fine brushstrokes. However, as fashion trends evolved, hand-painting gradually gave way to other embellishments, causing San Diego to set aside his paintbrushes.

The global pandemic of 2020 brought the fashion industry to a halt, giving San Diego an opportunity to revive his dormant passion for painting. Instead of flowing fabrics, he turned to canvases, but fashion continued to exert a strong influence on his artwork. Inspired by his daughter Abby, San Diego's pieces portray dusky Filipina beauty in Filipiniana attire, celebrating various Filipino traditions such as "pamamanhikan" (courtship), "kasalan" (wedding), and the vibrant festivals that define the country.

In October 2021, San Diego held his inaugural solo exhibit titled "Baro't Saya, Tuwa at Ligaya" at the Mega Fashion Hall of SM Megamall. In an interview, the artist-designer emphasized that his works are personal expressions of nationalism. Through the costumes, furniture, settings, and scenarios depicted on his canvases, San Diego encapsulates his love for the Philippines and its rich history.

On April 15, 2023, Edgar San Diego was honored with the prestigious 1st Outstanding UST Atelier Alumni Honors for his contributions to fashion and arts. Deeply committed to preserving and integrating Filipina culture into mainstream America, PAFCOM, a non-profit organization based in New Jersey, was awarded the Presidential Banaag Award in 2021. The organization plays a crucial role in supporting the Filipino arts and culture.

Edgar San Diego's upcoming exhibits aim to share his talents and experiences with the first, second, and third generations of Filipino-Americans. The exhibit not only supports the Filipino arts and culture in the United States and the Philippines but also fosters cultural exchange and appreciation. Visitors can expect to witness creative designs of the Terno, Barong Tagalog, Maria Clara, Baro at Saya, Kimona, as well as traditional woven materials from the Mountain Province and tinalak from Mindanao.

Edgar San Diego's solo fashion and art exhibits in New York and Hawaii represent a celebration of Filipino fashion, artistry, and cultural heritage. Through his paintings, artworks, and designs, San Diego invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of Philippine traditions and craftsmanship. As a visionary artist and fashion designer, San Diego continues to leave an indelible mark on the industry while fostering a deep appreciation for the Philippines' rich cultural tapestry.
