Celebrating a Decade of Filipino Poetry: "Ningning at Liwanag" Anthology

In the vibrant world of Filipino literature, poetry stands as a timeless beacon of creativity and expression. It captures the essence of emotions, culture, and history, echoing the sentiments of generations past and present. Now, a remarkable anthology titled "Ningning at Liwanag" has emerged, featuring the works of ten grand winners of the prestigious Gawad Maningning Miclat, spanning from 2003 to 2021. This anthology not only celebrates the beauty of Filipino poetry but also pays tribute to the indomitable spirit of Maningning Miclat herself.

Published by MMAFI (Maningning Miclat Art Foundation, Inc.) and Erehwon Artworld Corporation, "Ningning at Liwanag" is a hardbound, full-color masterpiece. The cover of this exquisite book features a painting by the illustrious Maningning Miclat, a multi-talented Filipina who left an indelible mark on the world of art and literature before her untimely passing at the age of 28 on September 29, 2000.

The anthology is more than just words on paper; it's a visual and literary treat. Ten evocative photographs by poet and writer Mario I. Miclat adorn the pages, each one meticulously chosen to complement the ten poetry collections featured within. The artistic prowess behind the book's design comes from veteran artist and poet Fidel Rillo, who has skillfully crafted a work of art in itself.

Acknowledging the significance of "Ningning at Liwanag," the National Book Development Board (NBDB) awarded it a Publication Grant for 2023. This grant reflects the literary excellence and cultural importance that the anthology embodies, further underscoring its contribution to the Filipino literary landscape.

The anthology showcases the poetic brilliance of ten grand winners of the Gawad Maningning Miclat:

Joselito D. Delos Reyes - "Ang Lungsod Namin at Iba Pang mga Tula" (2003)
Joseph de Luna Saguid - "Pagsilip sa Bunganga ng Araw" (2005)
T. Delos Reyes - "Bilang Babae" (2007)
Kristian Sendon Cordero - "Labí" (2009)
Enrique S. Villasis - "Agua" (2011)
Phillip Yerro Kimpo - "Hanggitna" (2013)
Reparado Galos III - "Mga Pagtitig Mula sa Dalampasigan" (2015)
Kid Orit - "Para Kay P" (2017)
Ralph Fonte - "Mga Alimbukay ng Agwat" (2019)
Genesis Historillo - "Ang Hugis ng Pandemya" (2021)

Each of these poets has contributed significantly to the Filipino literary scene, and their works have been selected with great care and consideration.

The anthology "Ningning at Liwanag" has garnered the admiration of National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario. In his introduction to the book, he writes, "The rebellious role of poetry in the collection of the Maningning Miclat Award winners is a mission initiated by Balagtas in the 19th century and heightened by the writings of Rizal, Plaridel, Bonifacio, and Jacinto. It was said that this faded away when Americanization became dominant in the 20th century. It may have been dominated but it did not fade away. The spirit of freedom of the 1896 Revolution is alive and even more ardent in introspection, in the endeavor to give meaningful guidance, and in discovering effective means and ways of expression to fill the hearts and minds of the Filipino masses with new awareness."

These words encapsulate the enduring significance of poetry in the Filipino cultural narrative.

The ten outstanding poetry collections featured in "Ningning at Liwanag" have been carefully chosen by a competition jury composed of the best and multi-awarded poets in the Filipino literary world. The esteemed members of the jury include Teo Antonio, Rebecca and Roberto Añonuevo, Joey Baquiran, Luna Sicat Cleto, Michael M. Coroza, Ruth Elynia Mabanglo, Rogelio Mangahas (posthumously), Vim Nadera, and Benilda S. Santos.

Their discerning eye and appreciation for poetic artistry have ensured that this anthology truly represents the cream of Filipino poetry.

Maningning Miclat's legacy continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those who share her passion for art and literature. Her untimely departure may have taken her from this world, but her spirit lives on through the Maningning Miclat Art Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to nurturing young poets and painters, encouraging them to hone their craft and carry forward the torch of creativity that Maningning Miclat lit during her brief but impactful life.
