PETA's "Walang Aray" Musical: A Riotous Celebration of Love and Laughter

Get ready to laugh your hearts out as the uproarious Filipino musical, Walang Aray, makes its triumphant return to the stage. This side-splitting reimagination of Severino Reyes' classic zarzuela, Walang Sugat, promises to tickle your funny bone and warm your heart. With a limited three-weekend run at the PETA Theater Center from October 6 to 22, 2023, this is a theatrical event you won't want to miss.

Walang Aray is a witty and hilarious spoof and tribute to the iconic zarzuela tradition. It takes the beloved themes of love, nationalism, and patriotism and gives them a contemporary twist. With a blend of catchy tunes, pop culture references, irreverent humor, witty wordplay, and razor-sharp one-liners, this musical promises to leave audiences in stitches from start to finish.

PETA's decision to bring back Walang Aray for this limited engagement is a testament to the show's unique brilliance and charm. The initial run in 2019 was a resounding success, with multiple sold-out shows and enthusiastic responses from both new and returning audiences.

The musical recently earned a whopping 21 citations from Gawad Buhay!, the Philippines' premier theater awards, including Outstanding Book of a Musical, Outstanding Original Musical, Outstanding Original Score, Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical, Outstanding Stage Direction for a Musical, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Sound Design, and Outstanding Set Design.

Gio Gahol and Marynor Madamesila, along with Shaira Opsimar and Jon Abella, lead the cast with their outstanding portrayals of the star-crossed lovers, Tenyong and Julia. Their performances have earned them citations for Female and Male Lead Performance in a Musical in the Gawad Buhay! Awards.

But it's not just the brilliant performances that make Walang Aray a must-see. The chemistry of the PETA Ensemble, the heart and soul of many PETA productions, is a highlight of the show. Returning ensemble cast members include Jarred Jaicten and Bene Manaois as Miguel, Kiki Baento as Monica, Carlon Matobato as Lucas, Norbs Portales and Csai Habla as Don Tadeo, Neomi Gonzales as Doña Juana, and John Moran as Padre Alfaro. They are joined by the equally memorable ensemble of Donn Boco, Gerard Dy, Yeyin Dela Cruz, Ada Tayao, and Ayla Garcia, who shine in their multiple roles.

Behind the scenes, the creative team of Walang Aray includes award-winning playwright Rody Vera, along with young creatives like Vince Lim (composer, musical director, sound designer, and additional lyrics), Ian Segarra (director), Gio Gahol (choreographer), Julio Garcia (set designer), David Esguerra (lighting designer), Haps Constantino (sound designer), and JayLo Conanan (costume designer).
