Discover the Artistry of DUGÓNGGINTÔ: A Celebration of Filipino Goldsmith Craftsmanship
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Gallery recently unveiled a mesmerizing exhibition titled DUGÓNGGINTÔ on February 8, 2024, showcasing the remarkable collaboration between goldsmith Ely “Oslog” Arcilla Jr. and jewelry designer Adam Pereyra. Curated by Marian Pastor Roces, this exhibition offers a profound exploration of the age-old tradition of utilizing gold as a medium for artistic expression in the Philippines.
In Filipino societies, gold holds significant cultural and symbolic value, representing purity of the inner being or "dalisay." It serves as a tangible manifestation of virtuosity, allowing artists to convey the pleasures of both invisible and visible powers through their creations.
DUGÓNGGINTÔ, held in conjunction with the celebration of National Arts Month, aims to democratize access to these exquisite pieces, which are often confined to elite circles and art connoisseurs. The opening ceremony, graced by NCCA deputy executive director for operations Bernan Joseph R. Corpuz and curator Marian Pastor Roces, underscored the importance of recognizing and celebrating the talents behind the artworks.
Pereyra, in his mission to honor the legacy and artistry of Oslog, emphasizes the significance of acknowledging the creators behind traditional and folk arts. The exhibition's ribbon-cutting ceremony saw the presence of students, arts and culture enthusiasts, and members of the general public, reflecting the widespread interest and appreciation for Filipino artistry.
"DUGÓNGGINTÔ" will be on display from February 8 to 29, 2024, at the NCCA Gallery located in Manila. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich cultural heritage and artistic mastery of Filipino goldsmith craftsmanship.
