Brazilian Guitar and Cello: Manila Symphony Orchestra’s August 9 Concert Announced

A lyrical convergence of Brazil and the Baroque

Amid shifting rains and rhythms, the Manila Symphony Orchestra Foundation Inc., in collaboration with Standard Insurance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil through the Guimarães Rosa Institute (IGR) and the Embassy of Brazil in Manila, proudly presents Brazilian Guitar and Cello—an evening where music transcends geography and becomes language, memory, and motion.

Set for Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 7:30 PM, the performance will take place at the Bayanihan Hall, Creative Arts Centre of the British School Manila, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

At its core, the concert is a curatorial tapestry—bridging classical form and folkloric warmth, European precision and South American soul—led by an ensemble of exceptional international and Filipino artists.

Featured Artists:
🎸 Fabio Zanon, guitar – A master of tone and touch, with accolades from the Francisco Tárrega and GFA competitions, and a career shaped by the discipline of London and the vibrancy of São Paulo.
🎻 Fabio Presgrave, cello – A Juilliard-trained cellist known for his commanding interpretations and collaborations with major orchestras across Latin America and the Middle East.
🎤 Stephanie Quintin, soprano – A Filipina artist celebrated for her vocal agility and contemporary resonance, with degrees from UP Diliman and UC San Diego.
🎼 Marlon Chen, conductor – The MSO’s Music Director since 2019, bringing charismatic precision and interpretative depth to every podium he steps onto.

Program Highlights:

Part I
Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7: Prelúdio (Ponteio) by Heitor Villa-Lobos
Concierto de Cámara by Jeffrey Ching

Part II
Concerto No. 4 for Guitar and Strings by Radamés Gnattali
Le Grand Tango by Astor Piazzolla
Ária and Dança from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4 by Villa-Lobos

The repertoire pays tribute to the fertile intersections of tradition and innovation—where Baroque architecture meets Brazilian folk rhythm, where tango’s urgency entwines with the cello’s melancholy, where five nationalities find voice in one quintuple concerto.
