Experience 'Pangalay at Maskara': A Cultural Extravaganza at FEU Auditorium on October 28, 2024
![]() |
If you're a fan of dance, culture, or simply looking to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Philippine heritage, mark your calendars for October 28, 2024, at 4:00 PM. The AlunAlun Dance Circle (ADC) is bringing their mesmerizing performance, "Pangalay at Maskara," back to the historic Far Eastern University Auditorium.
A Celebration of Indigenous Dance
"Pangalay at Maskara" isn't just a dance performance—it's a journey into the heart of the Sulu Archipelago's indigenous traditions. The ADC, a non-profit dance organization, is dedicated to preserving and promoting the pangalay dance—a traditional form that serves as a living link to other Asian dance cultures.

At the helm of ADC is Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa, the artistic director and master choreographer. Born and raised in Marikina, Ligaya discovered her calling in dance and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Far Eastern University in 1962.
“I am grateful to FEU for being a steadfast supporter of my life’s purpose of preserving the cultural and historical relevance of indigenous dance forms,” shared Ligaya in a 2015 interview with the Manila Standard.
Her lifelong commitment to documenting and teaching the dance traditions of the Sulu region has earned her numerous accolades:
- FEU’s Green and Gold Award for Outstanding Alumni (1994)
- Most Outstanding Artist of Tawi-Tawi Award (2011)
- Ramon Magsaysay Award (2015) for safeguarding pangalay
Innovation Meets Tradition
ADC's performances are renowned for their innovative theatricalizations of traditional dances like pangalay, lunsay, and langka. By incorporating masks—a staple in many Asian traditions—and blending traditional choreography with contemporary themes, pop music, and compositions by National Artists, they make the dance accessible and engaging for new generations.
As Edgar Allan M. Sambrano noted in the Daily Tribune on March 18, 2024:
“The show presented the importance of safeguarding a Philippine intangible cultural heritage which ensures the continuity of tradition that is, in turn, essential to the soul of a nation.”
Celebrate FEU Auditorium's 75th Anniversary
This year's performance is extra special as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the FEU Auditorium. What better way to celebrate than by hosting a performance that honors both Philippine culture and an esteemed alumna?
