Tiny Beautiful Things: A Heartfelt Exploration of Human Connection Comes to Manila

This November 2024, The Sandbox Collective brings the heartwarming and poignant play Tiny Beautiful Things: A Play About Life – In Letters to the Philippine stage. As the theatrical company’s season finale, it also serves as a fitting conclusion to Sandbox Collective’s 10th-year anniversary season, #SandboxNowandTen. Based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed, this production promises to be an emotionally rich exploration of life, love, and community.

A Unique Blend of Fiction and Reality

Tiny Beautiful Things blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction, taking inspiration from Cheryl Strayed’s time as an anonymous advice columnist. Through a series of letters exchanged between Strayed's character, Sugar, and her letter writers, the play delves deep into human emotions and the universal struggles we all face. Director Jenny Jamora has masterfully crafted a set that evolves with the narrative, representing how Sugar and the letter writers’ lives intertwine as they share their stories.

According to Jamora, “The space is physically the same, but toward the end of the play, the way they use it should reflect the community this group of people has become.” It’s this evolution of space and connection that makes Tiny Beautiful Things so relatable and profound.

An Exceptional Cast Led by Iza Calzado

In this Philippine premiere, the role of Sugar will be played by the talented Iza Calzado, who will bring depth and authenticity to the character. Joining her are Rody Vera, Gabby Padilla, and Ketchup Eusebio, who will portray a wide range of letter writers, each seeking Sugar's advice on their struggles. The play highlights the diversity of human experience, with characters remaining anonymous through code names, but their stories striking a familiar and emotional chord with audiences.

Gawad Buhay awardees Regina De Vera and Brian Sy will also join the cast, with Sy serving as swing/letter writer in certain performances.

A Collaborative Effort of Award-Winning Creatives

At the helm of this production is Gawad Buhay awardee Jenny Jamora, alongside an award-winning artistic and production team. Marcel David serves as assistant director, while Kayla Teodoro, Kiefer Sison, Arvy Dimaculangan, Krystal Kane, and JV Rabano round out the team, contributing to the set design, lighting, sound, costume styling, and photography, respectively. With such a talented group, the audience can expect an exceptional, visually and emotionally engaging performance.
