Step into the Enchantment of Philippine Mythology: "Maria Makiling, The Musical"

Running from October 2024 to April 2025

This upcoming season, Kids Acts Philippines (KAPI) proudly presents an enchanting retelling of one of the Philippines' most cherished legends with Maria Makiling, The Musical. Adapted from a story by Dr. Jose Rizal, this captivating production will run from October 2024 to April 2025 at St. Cecilia’s Hall, St. Scholastica’s College Manila.

A Magical Story Comes to Life

Under the artistic vision of award-winning creators Luigi Nacario and Eugene Belbis, Maria Makiling, The Musical promises to transport audiences to the mythical world of Mount Makiling. Nacario, who penned the book and lyrics, has teamed up with Belbis, the musical’s composer, to deliver a show filled with breathtaking songs, captivating choreography, and a story rooted in Filipino folklore. Their work is a tribute to the power of theatre to educate, entertain, and inspire, especially for young audiences.

The Myth of Maria Makiling

The musical tells the story of Maria, a beautiful and kind-hearted maiden who descends from her castle in the clouds to live among humans. As the daughter of Bathala, the supreme deity, Maria possesses magical abilities but uses them to quietly help the villagers of Mount Makiling. Whether transforming simple gifts into treasures or helping those in need, she becomes a beloved figure among the people.

While living among mortals, Maria falls in love with Juan, a humble farmer, and their romance blossoms. However, their love faces an impossible challenge when war threatens the land. Juan enters into an arranged marriage to avoid being drafted into the army, breaking Maria's heart. Devastated, she returns to the heavens and transforms into the eternal guardian of Mount Makiling. Her presence remains, watching over the mountain and its people, promising that any harm to the land will be met with dire consequences.

The tale of Maria Makiling is a story of love, betrayal, sacrifice, and the enduring bond between humans and nature. Through this musical, KAPI brings this legendary folklore to life, emphasizing themes of compassion, respect, and the protection of our environment.
