Dulaang UP’s “Nanay Bangis” Fiercely Opens November 2024

Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (Dulaang UP) kicks off its 47th theater season this November with the powerful premiere of Nanay Bangis, running from November 15 through December 1, 2024. This production adapts Bertolt Brecht’s classic Mother Courage and Her Children, transforming it into a deeply Filipino narrative about loss, resilience, and survival during the conflict between the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Philippine Army from 1971 to 1981.

An All-Star Cast and Crew Return to Dulaang UP

Directed by seasoned theater director J. William Herbert Sigmund Go, the play features a mix of returning alumni and promising new talents from UP’s theater program. Lead actor Ge Malacaman Villamil takes on the titular role of Nanay Bangis, supported by notable performers Air Paz, Rona Rostata, and Fred Layno. Go, a former artistic director at Tanghalang Pilipino and co-founder of Virgin Labfest, brings his expertise back to Dulaang UP, also serving as a mentor to the theater students involved in this production.

The 47th Theater Season: “Amihan at Habagat”

This season’s theme, “Amihan at Habagat,” centers on the dual forces shaping life in the Philippines. Each play explores these “push-and-pull” forces, delving into themes of political and ecological precarity that mirror the amihan (northeast monsoon) and habagat (southwest monsoon). Dulaang UP is debuting two unique banners this season—DUP CLASSICS, which revives timeless plays with a fresh Filipino perspective, and DUP INNOVATE, a space for experimental theater.
